Our ship of choice for our Antarctica and South Georgia programs, Polar Pioneer’s excellent reputation for polar expedition cruising is due to her strength, manoeuvrability and size. She is small and nimble, which means she can sail up close to landing sites and venture where other, larger ships can’t. Carrying just 54 passengers, she allows us to offer you a far more personal and intimate experience of the destination we are visiting. Originally built as an ice-strengthened research vessel in Finland in 1982, she was refurbished in 2000 and converted into a passenger ship for expeditions to the Polar Regions.
On board you will find a range of accommodation types, including triple and twin cabins as well as larger suites, all featuring outside facing portholes or windows and ample storage space for your gear. Cabins have either shared or private bathroom facilities, whilst suites offer ensuite bathrooms and lounge areas. See below for detailed cabin information and deck plan.
Communal areas include a fully-stocked lounge bar, small library (stocked with a good collection of polar books), two free-seating dining rooms, lecture room, sauna (shared with our crew) as well as spacious viewing platforms and observation decks.
As much as we love Polar Pioneer, our expeditions are about getting off the ship and exploring our surrounds. A small fleet of inflatable Zodiacs (rubber boats) with outboard motors enable us to travel from ship to shore, quickly and easily. Loan of gumboots to wear ashore are provided for all passengers for the duration of the voyage.
